Hard Spun's Good Lord Lorrie Blazes Home Late In Woodhaven

Good Lord Lorrie | Coglianese

Good Lord Lorrie (Hard Spun) came back from a lengthy layoff to not only win his seasonal bow but also claim his first black-type in the Woodhaven S,

When last seen, the chestnut broke his maiden in a turf dash at Saratoga last summer, defeating SP Smokey Smokey (Mendelssohn) and SP Ocean Mermaid (GB) (Kingman {GB}). Brushing with a rival after the jump, he was well-placed early in third and tracked the leading duo until late on the backstretch, where he took closer order. Called for a rally, he shifted from the fence to three wide entering the stretch, kicked on nearing the furlong marker, and collared The Big Torpedo (Big Brown) by a half-length.

“He's always been a naturally talented horse. We were always high on him from the first time he breezed, and [trainer] George [Weaver] was very high on him up there [at Saratoga]. The way he won first time out, you just knew he was very talented and promising,” said Blair Golen, Weaver's assistant. “I'm not surprised that he won. He got such a great ride and a great trip. Luckily, he stayed out of trouble.”

Winning rider Flavien Prat added, “We got into a good spot going into the first turn and he relaxed well down the backside. I was able to save ground pretty much all the way around and he showed some heart at the end. He was very brave and it was a good run.”

The second winner from as many to the races, Good Lord Lorrie has a 2-year-old half-brother by Nyquist as well as a yearling half-brother by Street Sense. Spinning Wheel, a half-sister to SW Space Mountain (Street Cry {Ire}) and MGISP Ride On Curlin (Curlin), was barren for this season after a visit to City of Light. This is the female line of GISW Victory Ride. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV.
